The extent to which a city is bike-friendly depends on multitude of factors, including terrain, street size and layout, number of cars, infrastructure (bike lanes, road condition, etc), and general attitude of the populace and government concerning this mode of transit.

A good place for biking is one in which most of these elements are in harmony - for example, all the laws in the world intended to protect cyclists are meaningless if the citizenry and police turn a blind eye to infractions. Similarly, even the friendliest and most car-free of towns may be no place for a bike if 90% of your route will involve massive hills.

Below are some of the cities around the world that offer a solid fusion of pro-bike circumstances:

- Amsterdam, Netherlands - known as the “bike capital of the world,” this hip urban center is famous for its perpetually bike-swamped streets in which those on two wheels are king.

- Portland, Oregon, USA - a mid-size city teeming with cycle enthusiasts, Portland boasts a biking network of over 620 miles.

- Copenhagen, Denmark - perhaps the greatest testament of Copenhagen’s bike-friendless is its extremely well-developed infrastructure, which includes separate lanes and turn signals for bikers.

- Sandes, Norway - this town of just under 60,000 was one of two European cities chosen as the site of biking pilot programs that continued to thrive well after their four-year timeline.
