Buying a Bike: Things to Consider

Many people are shocked when they realize how expensive a new bike can be. For this reason, these same people start out with a used bike and then upgrade to a new bike once they are certain they’ll use the bike.
 
Whenever buying a used bike, it is a good idea to keep in mind that used bikes are relatively easy to find and so it’s not necessary to buy the first you see. Because of this, you need to keep your eyes open. There are numerous places to check for bikes, including Craigslist, thrift stores, police auctions, garage sales, and Freecycle. If you live in a college town, there will be a lot of bikes available since so many college kids have bikes. 

When you find a bike that you think shows potential, research the brand. Many bikes are built super cheaply and are meant to be replaced rather than repaired. The best way to find out is by doing some quick research on the brand. In addition to telling you if the bike is actually worth buying, this research may tell you that you’re getting a super deal on the bike. 

Like used cars, used bikes frequently have some minor cosmetic defects. While they may be a little upsetting, they’re not a big deal. The big deal problem is bent metal. Whenever looking at a potential bike, check to make sure that the frame, forks, and wheels are all in good shape. A small amount of rust, particularly when it’s on the chain, isn’t a big deal but may help you negotiate a lower price. 

Not everyone needs a $5,500 carbon frame bike and not everyone needs a mountain bike. Consider your needs before you buy the bike so you can be sure to buy something that is actually suitable for you. For example, if you’re mainly planning on riding your bike on roads to and from work, for example, a mountain bike isn’t the best option. In addition to being heavier than road bikes, the studded tires require more effort to move. 

After you buy your bike, make sure that it is road worthy. This can be done by taking the bike to a bike shop for a tune up (yes, bikes need them too). The bike shop will generally not charge an arm and a leg to inspect your bike for you and will be able to fix anything that is wrong with your bike, like the brakes.  

Biking gear is another important part of the process. The two must haves for any cyclist are a lock and a helmet. Depending on what you’re planning on doing with your bike, lights for night riding and a basket or panniers for storage space can all be necessary. Another thing to consider is fenders. These will prevent the bike from kicking up water and grit from the road and onto you.
